It Sucks to Suck. So I Got Better.

Last year I found myself at an unhealthy crossroads.

I had turned 37. It had occurred to me that if I did not like this unhealthy condition I was in, it was on me to change it. Don’t like it? Get better. So being basic, I wrote down 37 goals. Some would be minor stretches. Some seemed a long way off. Some appeared nearly impossible.

These goals aligned with three main principles: Healthier. Wealthier. Wiser.

I began running again. Slowly and painfully at first. But I kept showing up. And I got better. And in doing so I lost 60 pounds (27kg).

With a healthier body, I started pursuing a healthier mind. I read 20 books. I joined a writing cohort that fundamentally changed how I view content. I meditated every other day. I still suck at mediation, but I got better.

I more than doubled my savings rate from 15% to over 30%. I opened up positions in new asset classes. I lost $30 on Gamestop but learned a valuable lesson forever. I’m still far away from FIRE, but I got better.

I took up new hobbies. I got into gardening. I ate food that I grew. I got pretty good at making Bolognese sauce. I accidentally killed some plants and ruined some batches of sauce. It wasn’t perfect, but I got better.

I reconnected with family and friends that were important to me. I tapped into my roots by reading my grandfather’s memoir. I wrote thank you notes to people that influenced me. I’m still not the best dad, the best husband, or the best friend or brother; but I got better.

And today, I am so far ahead of where I was a year ago. The most exciting and motivating part? There is still so much farther to go.

Start today.

When you look up in a year, you’ll be amazed. I promise you.
