Letter to My One Year Old

Happy Birthday son!

It has now been an entire year since we welcomed you to this world.

And what a year it’s been.

You were born as an 11 pound meatball to your poor mother. She was a champ in delivering you and I’ve seldom been more proud of her elegance and toughness.

You are a cheerful little boy whose smile lights up the room.

You follow your older brother around as fast as your little legs can carry you. He makes you laugh and laugh like nobody else.

You are not a great sleeper. This has been been our kryptonite.

You are sweet and fearless and stubborn and affectionate.

You started walking at 10 months, which has been fun. You are babbling about a half dozen words. I cannot wait to see how your personality blossoms and evolves.

Above all, you are curious and relentless. These traits may lead you into trouble some day, but they will also be the means of your emancipation from those troubles.

Born the day after Thanksgiving, you’ve added new light and laughter to our lives. You’ve also helped me become a much more gracious and generous version of myself.

Sometimes, it can be hard to maintain perspective in life with everything swirling around us these days.

So fill your heart and mind with noble and loving thoughts and your life will be rich beyond measure.

I love you my son. I can’t wait to see what this world has in store for you.
