New Year’s Day is a convenient time for renewal.
The calendar rolls over. We get up in the morning, but something feels different. A new sense is in the air. Possibilities exist in seemingly limitless abundance.
We come out of the gate hot. We are motivated. We’ve been waiting since Thanksgiving for the chance to prove ourselves again.
But too many of us lack discipline. We don’t finish what we start.
I used to be so guilty of this. I was a big talker. I was even pretty good at starting things. But I was never a good finisher. I didn’t always see things through and as a result I probably haven’t accomplished as much as I could have.
As a result, I used to think about how there were so many things I “should” be doing. Then I’d get mad at myself when those things didn’t get done.
This all changed in May of 2020, when I realized I was squandering everything.
Should do turned in must do.
I got back to running again, lost a lot of weight and got healthy. I quit drinking, subscribed to a meal plan and started eating better. As a result, I started sleeping better than I had in decades.
This gave me the energy I needed to be a better husband and a better father. I was also a better friend, son and brother.
Somewhere along the way I found what was most important to me and why.
The best way to get what you want out of life is to decide what you want.
Decide today and make this the year you live up to your dreams.
Happy January 1st.
