Even in today’s cutthroat world for money, power, information, and respect; the extra mile is still a lonely road.
It always has been.
In previous generations, people have lacked tools, experience, and education to put them on a level and competitive playing field. Today, many of these obstacles have been reduced. Nowadays, with nearly limitless information and opportunities at our fingertips we instead lack will, attention, and discipline.
Because we have become so conditioned to seeing our every desire quickly fulfilled.
Express wash for the clothes, get-rich quick schemes, 8-Minute Abs, same-day delivery, on-demand television (my 4-year-old saw his first commercial recently and had no idea what it was), 7-Minute Abs, etc. You see where I’m going here.
For some insane reason, we have the same expectations of quick and easy timelines when it comes to our most audacious and challenging goals.
Far too often, we take the path of least resistance, the easy route. We seek the go-around, the short-cut. Then we come up short, blame something else other than ourselves and give it another half-assed go.
Because we desperately want to believe The Lie.
We want to believe there is a path to victory without sacrifice. We want to believe there can be comfort with toil. We want to believe that overnight success is possible.
Because then it could be us.
We like to ask those “overnight successes” how they did it? What did they do? What was their secret?
The big secret is there is no big secret.
The shortcut is a lie.
